TRAILBLAZING CEO, ENTREPRENEUR AND INVESTOR PHYLLIS NEWHOUSE LAUNCHES LEADERSHIP COURSE BASED ON LESSONS LEARNED DURING HER 22-YEAR MILITARY CAREER

Newhouse’s First Online Course, “Taking the Lead,” Draws on the Military’s 11 Principles for Mastering the Art of Effective Leadership

Kennesaw, GA – June 1, 2022 – Phyllis Newhouse, a trailblazing CEO, entrepreneur, investor and board member, today announced the launch of her first online course, “Taking the Lead: The 11 Principles of Leadership.” Designed to help professionals at all career levels master the art of leadership, the course draws on lessons created by the US Army and used for more than 60 years to develop generations of effective military leaders. In the highly interactive course, Newhouse enhances those principles with her own insights gained during her 22-year military career and her subsequent experience founding and leading a cybersecurity company, two SPACs and ShoulderUp, a movement dedicated to educating and empowering women around the world to reach their greatest potential.

“Taking the Lead” not only teaches the 11 essential principles for leadership, but also shows how to apply them to real-world situations. Using a combination of short videos, podcasts, daily action items and downloadable worksheets, Newhouse teaches each lesson and then takes a deep dive to expand on the principle, sharing how she has implemented it to build her company and how students can apply it to their everyday business and personal lives. The 6.5-hour course, which includes a free 30-minute preview, covers topics such as the importance of self-knowledge and knowing your value card, taking and assigning responsibility, communicating effectively, developing knowledge and proficiency, making timely and informed decisions, and becoming a role model that others respect and respond to.

“The best leaders have been given a strong foundation for leadership that they look to improve on throughout their careers and lives,” said Newhouse. “This online course takes the 11 core leadership principles taught in the military and shows how and why they are relevant to entrepreneurs and professionals in every industry. True leaders are never done learning and they constantly add new skills and capabilities to their leadership toolkit. This course offers lessons that are valuable to leaders in any organization and at every career stage.”

Newhouse is Chair of Xtreme Solutions, Inc., a provider of industry-leading information technology and cybersecurity services and solutions that she founded in 2002 and led as CEO for nearly two decades. She is also CEO of ShoulderUp Technology Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) she co-founded in 2021. In 2020, she co-founded and became CEO of Athena Technology Acquisition Corp., which closed a $250 million IPO in March 2021, making it the only SPAC listed on the New York Stock Exchange with a Black female CEO. Athena subsequently combined with Heliogen Inc., a leading provider of AI-enabled concentrated solar power, in December 2021, and Newhouse was named to the Heliogen board of directors. Earlier in her career, Newhouse spent 22 years in the US Army, including serving three assignments at the Pentagon and establishing the Cyber Espionage Task Force.

In 2019, Newhouse and Academy Award–winning actress Viola Davis co-founded ShoulderUp, the first women-founded and women-led influencer fund providing access to a diverse portfolio of media, technology and sports entertainment companies. In 2017, Newhouse became the first woman to win an Ernst & Young (EY) Entrepreneur of The Year® award in the technology category and in 2019, she was inducted into the Enterprising Women Hall of Fame. Newhouse has been featured in Entrepreneur, Inc., Atlanta Business Journal, Forbes, Yahoo Finance, NBC News, Bloomberg and more. She holds an undergraduate degree from John F. Kennedy University.
